Korfball Canterbury facilitates school development programmes and runs tournaments for schools in the Canterbury region
YEAR 7 & 8 Schools Tournaments
Ten teams from six schools took part in Korfball Canterbury’s first year seven and eight schools tournament of 2016, at Cowles Stadium on 13 June. Around 120 young players participated in an exhilarating and action-packed day.
Teams from Heaton and Christchurch South both won all of their pool games to earn the right to compete against each other for the championship. It was a close final, with the lead changing hands twice before Christchurch South sealed the result right at the end for a 6-5 win. This was the first time since 2012 that the trophy has left Heaton, so well done to Christchurch South.
In the third and fourth place play-off, it was even more difficult to separate the two teams. Kirkwood and Beckenham played out to a 6-6 final scoreline and were unable to break the golden goal deadlock, so the game was decided on penalties in favour of Beckenham.
Congratulations to the winning teams, and also to the players who were named in the tournament team, based on their performances through the pool games: Jaxon Lange (Beckenham), Nic Shearer (Heaton), Zach Goldsmith (Christchurch South), Josiah Neli (Hillmorton), Katelyn McNabb (Heaton), Florence Nathan (Christchurch South), Judith Tuilotolava (Hillmorton) and Molly Mooar (Kirkwood).
Korfball Canterbury is looking forward to the next tournament for players in this age group, which is scheduled for 15 August at Pioneer Stadium. As our schools development programme continues, and with a larger venue, we are aiming to build numbers and make it an even more enjoyable event.
Thanks to the players, teachers and volunteers for helping make it such an excellent day, and thanks also to Sport Canterbury and the KiwiSport Initiative for their support.
